Keng’s edges Boleras in OT, grabs Women’s Division crown

Team Keng’s edged Team Boleras in the championship game of the APCRAA Alumni Basketball Tournament (AABT) 2016 women’s division, 81-71, on Saturday, October 15 at the APC Gymnasium.

The guest teams needed an extra five minute overtime to settle the women’s division champion.

Micmac Iida of Team Keng’s had a double-double performance of 23 points and 13 rebounds, with 6 assists. Jhen Constantino also have a productive game: 14 points and 7 rebounds.

Riki Convencido and Mileth Gutierrez topped the Boleras in scoring, contributing 24 and 22 points respectively. Gutierrez shot the lights out at the three point arc, making 4 out 10 attempts.

Despite having only five players available in the opening tip, Team Boleras exchange leads with Team Keng’s until the second quarter. At halftime, the score was 35-33 in favor of Team Keng’s.

The trend continued up the fourth quarter as more players from both teams are coming in to the playing venue. Team Keng’s were able to erect a 8-point barrier with three minutes remaining in the game. The lead was reduced to 4 points with two minutes left.

After a defensive stop by Team Boleras, Mileth Gutierrez made a crucial three point shot, reducing the Keng’s lead to 1. In the insuing play, Banjo Soriano of Team Keng’s was fouled and was able to make her free throws, giving them a three point lead with 54 seconds left. Gutierrez made another three point shot, tying the game at 67-all with 44 seconds left, forcing the game into overtime.

In the extension period, it was Micmac Iida of Team Keng’s who pushed for the lead, as the Boleras struggled in their field goal attempts, and let the Keng’s margin ballooned to 10 points at the end of overtime.
