Season 4 runners-up Knights notched their first victory in the APCRAA Basketball Tournament (ABT) Season 5 men’s division elimination round by defeating Titans, 79-63, on Saturday, July 13 at the Asia Pacific College Gymnasium.
2017 Rookie of the Year Mark Rivera of Knights finished with a double-double – 21 points and 16 rebounds. Rookie Nonoy Sonbise topped all scorers with 24 points with 6 rebounds and 2 steals.
Jayvee Febrer of Titans made 21 points and 2 rebounds while team captain Jaime Juadines did 13 points and 5 rebounds.
Knights mostly took control in the first half, leading by as much as 14 points in the 2nd quarter, only to be erased by Titans before the halftime buzzer sounded. However, Knights regained the upper hand in the third quarter and cruised through a 20-point lead before the final two minutes.
The game was marred with delays. Three Titan players wore the same jersey number. The lights in the APC Gymnasium also failed midway in the fourth quarter due to heavy rain outside the venue.
Both teams will be back in action in July 27 as Knights will face ASPAC at 6:30pm followed by Titans’ matchup with RamBall at 8:00pm.
