Renaissance crawls back in Game 2, captures D-League plum

Team Renaissance became the first champions of the APCRAA Basketball Tournament Season 9 D-League Division, defeating Team Jmbrtz with a come from behind victory in Game 2 of their best-of-three series, 67-60, on Saturday, August 23 at the APC Gymnasium.

Jmbrtz took control most of the game, leading by as much as 13 points in the 2nd quarter. The Renaissance slowly chipped away the lead by the fourth quarter, tying the game at 60-all with 1:54 remaining. Ian Gabon and Matt Tuya then shot back-to-back three point shots, propelling Renaissance with a 6 point advantage with less than a minute left.

Gabon finished with 19 points, 7 rebounds and 1 assist. Sean Mission had a double-double performance of 16 points and 10 rebounds. D-League MVP Jeff Bacong was named as the Finals MVP, finishing with 13 points, 15 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals, who also played the entire game without subbing out.

For Jmbrtz, Peter Abarracoso led the charge with 17 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals. Dennis Gascon added 15 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists in their team’s output.

As this season’s D-League champions, Team Renaissance will be promoted to the Elite Division the next season, replacing the division’s last placed team.
